As a Full Stack Developer at DOT, you’re responsible for building and maintaining the back and frontend components of our web-based data delivery products. You’ll work closely with our product managers, infrastructure, data science, engineering, and design teams to create scalable, secure, and efficient systems that help realise DOT’s vision of creating smart, simple, and beautifully designed data products.

We are a bunch of high achievers who are passionate about the work we do. Our culture reflects our love of chasing a challenge. We are looking for a smart, passionate individual to grow and learn within our Wellington-based team. We've got a great working environment, right in the heart of the city.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable backend services, RESTful APIs, and database systems, collaborating with data science teams to ensure development requirements are met for their models
  • Develop responsive frontend applications that translate design mockups into functional, user-friendly interfaces with reusable components
  • Work with product, design, and leadership teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions and establish development roadmaps
  • Implement comprehensive security measures, testing processes, and system monitoring to ensure data protection and platform reliability
  • Maintain thorough technical documentation for APIs, system architecture, and development processes
  • Provide technical expertise for client projects while identifying opportunities for system improvements
  • As the team grows, mentor junior developers and establish development best practices

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven experience in both backend and frontend development, with proficiency in languages such as Javascript (required), Python and SQL (desirable).
  • Experience in technologies similar to SvelteKit, Django and Supabase.
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Snowflake.
  • Understanding of database design concepts, data modelling requirements, and best practice database management systems
  • In-depth understanding of the entire web development process (design, development and deployment)
  • Track record of successfully managing multiple company or customer websites
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication and collaboration skills.

Data Scientist - Consulting

About us

DOT Loves Data takes data and translates it into stories: stories that are simple to digest and easy to action. We put the answers in the hands of those that need to make decisions, and we do it with style (and scale). Our mission is that no business or organisation in New Zealand will make a decision without consulting DOT or DOT’s data – and we’re looking for a new team member in our Consulting & Data Science team to help us to achieve just that.

About the role

We’re looking for a client-facing Data Scientist who knows that the magic isn’t just in building the model, it’s in understanding the real question, and showing the right answer in a way that’s clear, smart, and impactful. Day to day you'll be:

  • Delivering projects that help clients extract value from data to deliver meaningful solutions
  • Leading consulting projects from start to finish. This includes helping design the approach, developing the methodologies, conducting the analytics, and communicating the results
  • Identifying the story from the data
  • Helping clients develop innovative approaches using data science

About you

You’re open-minded, love getting stuck in to explore why and so what and so what next questions. You make the complex simple and relatable.

We’ll be looking to see your:

  • Ability to think outside the square
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant technical field (for example maths, stats, data science, engineering and/or computer science)
  • Experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches, ideally using an analytics tool, preferably R or Python
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques such as classification, clustering, and model evaluation
  • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in  a clear, precise, and actionable manner to non-technical audiences
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
  • Comfort manipulating and analysing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources
  • Strong time management and autonomy – we trust you to get it done

Why you’ll love working here

Here at DOT, we work with autonomy, flexibility, and with care. You’ll be working across a variety of projects, with a broad range of clients, many of which are directly working towards a greater social good. Our projects move at pace (we’re more jet ski than barge), and you’ll have an awesome team and tools around you to support you in your day. You’ll hone your skills as you make a positive difference to people and our environment.

Are you ready to apply your knowledge and experience with a nimble and proactive team?  Apply now with your CV and cover letter to cara@dotlovesdata.com
