Data Engineer

Big shoes to fill

Natasha is off. We are gutted, but also super happy for Natasha as she has been accepted into the University of Amsterdam to do her Masters of Logic. Bloody awesome. We now need someone to fill Natasha’s big shoes!

Natasha is super sharp, just talking to her leaves you feeling sharper too. As a team mate you are always confident in giving Natasha the ball, and even better, if you make a mistake, Natasha is the type of teammate who helps fix it straight away.

She is called a Data Engineer but to us she is more than that. So if you're excited about combining your technical skills and cool human qualities like Natasha does, then we would love to hear from you.

About us

We’re a bunch of solution seekers drawn together by our love of data and shared mission to make things better for businesses and communities. DOT’s team is a unique blend of marketers, data scientists, data engineers, designers and developers. Together we combine analytical and creative thinking to develop world class data driven products and services.

About the role

Data Engineers are critical to the execution of DOT’s strategy, and ensuring data, technical infrastructure and tools support DOT’s philosophy of: Smart, Simple and Beautiful, as we embark on our mission to forever change the way people look at data.

The data engineer is a technical role requiring expertise in a range of database design, software development and programming fields.  The role of a data engineer at DOT is to build robust and reliable systems and processes for handling and manipulating data.  The data engineer works with a variety of stakeholders to gather and store data in appropriate databases, create and implement tools and processes for batch processing or real-time processing, and serve the data to interested parties for interrogation.

We'll be looking at your ability to

  • Design efficient and robust ETL workflows
  • Assist the collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources
  • Store different types of data in different forms, work with potentially incomplete data sources and clean data sets to ensure the data is fit for purpose
  • Develop, test and communicate improved data capture, manipulation and cleansing techniques
  • Assist in documenting requirements as well as resolve conflicts or ambiguities
  • Interpret technical requirements to design and build analytic tools and software
  • Maintain databases, tools and systems for DOT including Pressroom, DOT’s database (Barry’s Place), DOT’s geo-coder app.

As part of the DOT team you will

  • Collaborate with team members and clients to solve complex data problems and provide fit for purpose solutions.
  • Participate in individual and whole staff professional development to upskill, share knowledge and innovative ideas.
  • Adhere to DOT’s company-wide policies around job processes, data security, privacy, health and safety, ethical conduct etc.
  • Prioritise tasks to forward DOT’s mission

Skills required

  • Extensive knowledge in different programming or scripting languages like Python and SQL (other languages such as Java, Linux, C++, PHP, Ruby, Postgres, mongoDB, GIS tools, SAS, and/or R are a plus)
  • Comfort manipulating and analysing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources
  • Ability to create examples, prototypes and demonstrations to enable interested parties to better understand the concepts
  • Having a good understanding of software design and architecture principles
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
  • Effective time management and time keeping to help deliver projects on time and on budget
  • Ability to work autonomously

If you have the technical smarts and cool human qualities to be the next member of our awesome Data Engineering team, we would love to hear from you. Join us in our mission to deliver impactful data solutions and shape the future of our industry.

Data Scientist - Consulting

Not just a brain box

Evie is off overseas and we need to replace her. Not that Evie is replaceable. So this is about finding someone who can make us better, like Evie did. Evie has the best attitude. She is super smart, but it’s her willingness to do what’s best for the team, that really makes Evie special. Any project Evie did, even the crappy ones, she did to the best of her ability. Her pride in her work is brilliant, her willingness to learn and improve amazing. We will miss Evie a lot.

So if you think you could be our next great hire, to help us get over losing Evie then send in your CV. But as you might have guessed we are looking for a top top person, not just a brain box.

About us

DOT Loves Data takes data and translates it into stories: stories that are simple to digest and easy to action. We put the answers in the hands of those that need to make decisions, and we do it with style (and scale). We have one goal, to take data and find ways for customers to create enduring value.

About the role

Working with clients and collaborating closely with our team of data scientists, data engineers and creatives, day to day you’ll be:

  • Delivering projects that help clients extract value from data to deliver meaningful solutions
  • Leading consulting projects from start to finish. This includes helping design the approach, developing the methodologies, conducting the analytics, and communicating the results
  • Identifying the story from the data
  • Helping clients develop innovative approaches using data science

About you

You’re open-minded, love getting stuck in to explore why and so what and so what next questions. You make the complex simple and relatable.

We’ll be looking to see your:

  • Ability to think outside the square
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant technical field (for example maths, stats, data science, engineering and/or computer science)
  • Experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches, ideally using an analytics tool, preferably R or Python (SAS also useful)
  • Ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in  a clear, precise, and actionable manner to non-technical audiences
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
  • Comfort manipulating and analysing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources
  • Comfort working in ambiguity

Why you’ll love working here

Here at DOT, we work with autonomy, flexibility, and with care. You’ll be working across a variety of projects, with a broad range of clients, many of which are directly working towards a greater social good. Our projects move at pace (we’re more jet ski than barge), and you’ll have an awesome team and tools around you to support you in your day. You’ll hone your skills as you make a positive difference to people and our environment.
